Intern Scheme

Come see what we are all about

  • In the past we've had interns for 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 3 months. We think 4 weeks is probably a good period - 2 weeks can be a bit too fast to be able to see any projects all the way through to completion which means you don't end up with anything you can put in your portfolio.

See our portfolio/website for the sort of work we do. We usually can't say what projects the intern will be working on (we often don't know ourselves more than a few days ahead). It will probably include some work for our biggest clients such as Coca Cola Amatil, Hilton/Multiplex, Jones Lang LaSalle and Active Physio although this depends entirely on the actual work going through the studio at the time.

In addition we could have virtually any other kind of design work in the studio at the time - ie branding, websites, packaging, HTML emails, brochures or signage.

We're a small studio (3 designers, 2 account managers, 2 part time admin people). It's an open plan studio with an informal, relaxed atmosphere with music and endless cups of tea!

Interns usually get to sit in on brainstorming meetings and client briefings (if there any in the studio during that period).

We're very experienced. Transformer began in 2002. Nigel has been a designer for 25yrs, our account managers have both been in the industry for 15yrs and the other 2 designers have 6yrs and 9yrs experience so you'll be getting the benefit of a lot of industry knowledge.

Because we're small we're usually juggling a lot of different projects. This can get stressful with tight time pressures and sometimes the need to stay late to meet a deadline - this is all part and parcel of the design industry so it's good for an intern to be exposed to it.

In large agencies it can be more like a 'production line' where the intern only works on a small part of very large projects. At Transformer everyone does some projects from concept to delivery and we all work on various parts of the projects so an intern would probably have a more varied and 'hands-on' experience at Transformer than at some of the larger agencies.

What we're looking for from our interns is a passion for design, flexible attitude (ie "I want to learn", not "I know it all already"), creative ideas and good, solid thinking (not simply repeating a design style that's fashionable).

We pay only a small token gesture - usually enough to cover travel.

Have a look at our website and see if you think you will fit. If so, contact Nigel.

  • Transformer offer internships for design students.

This is meant for people who are either doing a design degree or have just completed one. This is very common in the design industry as it gives the intern a chance to work on actual client projects and enhances their portfolio and CV.
